About us
The private University sector in Ghana took off in earnest from about 1988 with the establishment of a Bible College by the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC). In 1995, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church set up Valley View University College (now Valley View University) and in 1998, ICGC set up Central University College (now Central University). Long before these initiatives, Trinity Theological Seminary had been founded in 1942 by three protestant denominations (Methodist, Presbyterian, and Evangelical Presbyterian). Private universities in Ghana are relatively young. In this short period of time, their contribution to tertiary education has been enormous.
The establishment of
these Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) came at a critical time for Ghana
when the then three traditional universities – University of Ghana, University
of Science and Technology, and University of Cape Coast – were unable to
contain the growing need for Higher Education (HE) delivery in the country.
Private universities have widened access for people who are both studying and
working. A few private universities have been pioneers in certain critical
programs. In health care, for example, physician assistants’ and
community/public health programmes were introduced in Ghana by private
universities. Graduates from such courses are making great contributions to
health care delivery. We could also mention the area of Space Science
Technology that is being pioneered by a private university with limited
resources.
